Tobit 3:1-11, 16-17. To you, O Lord, I lift my soul – Ps 24(25):2-9. Mark 12:18-27.
I trust you, let me not be disappointed
One theme found in today’s readings, especially in the darkly beautiful prayer of Tobit and the psalm, is trust. Both maintain that the Lord is good, wise and just. Both speak of abandonment to his providence, with hope that he will work good. The psalm is perhaps more confident, while Tobit speaks to a gloomier hope, one which knows that God can bring light even from dark, good even from death, including our own. Tobit, as with many older people who have mentored me, has a deep humility, perhaps born of repentance. He is suffering, but doesn’t try to forge his own path, instead waiting for the ‘sentence’ of God. Tobit, Sarah and Jesus all express that we belong to the Lord, that our living, dying and even resurrection are all within his power. May we trust that he arranges all these for the good, and let him lead us.
