Hebrews 7:1-3, 15-17. You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek – Psalm 109(110):1-4. Mark 3:1-6.

Is it against the law on the Sabbath day to save life?

Another black mark against Jesus is when he is about to heal a man with a withered hand – on the Sabbath! It was early in Jesus’ ministry and the Pharisees were clearly concerned about his growing popularity. They watched his every move for an opportunity to accuse him. They were not interested in the man’s problem but only in what Jesus would do. Would Jesus heal the man with the disability or not? They were so caught up in their own manmade laws that they ignored the need of the poor man. Jesus was frustrated by them and felt anger and grief at their hardness of heart. Yet his pity for this man led to his healing him despite knowing where it would lead – ultimately to his death. Help us, Lord, always to do good rather than evil even when the outcome may cause us problems.
