About Today Readings

Daniel 3:14-20, 24-25, 28. Glory and praise for ever! – Daniel 3:52-56. John 8:31-42.

I did not come of my own accord but he sent me

The Eternal blessed his child, and armed
And sent him hence afar
To serve as champion in the field
Of elemental war
To be his Viceroy in the world
Of matter and of sense;
Upon the frontier, towards the foe
A resolute defence – St John Henry Newman/ Edward Elgar, The Dream of Gerontius

I had been to performances of Gerontius and had enjoyed them. However, when I sang it with a massed choir, it hit me like a bomb. I saw how incredible the Incarnation seemed to the angels. That the Father would send his beloved son to be vulnerable to human cruelty. That Jesus is our champion in the war between good and evil. That he stands in front of us as our defence against all that evil can do. That he does this as the viceroy of the Father.
