About Today Readings

Ss Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang & Cc

1 Timothy 3:14-16. How great are the works of the Lord! – Psalm 110(111):1-6. Luke 7:31-35.

Room within God’s family for many forms of holiness

The reading from Timothy is a beautiful statement of the nature and purpose of the Church, while in the Gospel Jesus chides his critics for being impossible to please. They weren’t happy with the austerity of Saint John, nor with the liberality of Jesus. Having these readings together is a happy coincidence which highlights one of the joys of Catholicism. In our tradition, as implied in Jesus’ words, there is room within God’s family for many forms of holiness. Among the saints we find many who resemble John, leading ascetic lives as witness to the ‘not yetness’ of this world. Equally, we see many whose joy and fullness of life testifies to the goodness of this imperfect world and its author. These two impulses meet in charity toward the suffering, seeing in them unquenchable goodness, and in their pain evidence that things are not yet as they ought to be.
