Acts 8:1-8. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy – Psalm 65(66):1-7. John 6:35-40.
Jesus the bread of life
Joy! The great detective story writer Dorothy L Sayers said that in Christianity the worst human tragedy, the death of Christ, unexpectedly turns to divine comedy, through the joy of his resurrection. On the one hand, in the reading from Acts, we see devastation as Saul goes from house to house, dragging Christian families off to jail. That is what our modern media would report – despairingly bad news. What might go unreported, however, is the other part of the reading: Philip’s message of salvation in Christ brings joy to an entire town in Samaria. Today’s psalm, meanwhile, calls on us to sing our joy to God. Song comes out of the overflow of feeling in a person’s heart: when what we feel can no longer be expressed in words alone, we add the intensifying power of music. Jesus, the Bread of Life, is the Bread of joy – Someone to sing about!Email this Print This Page
