About Today Readings

St Pius X

Ezekiel 34:1-11. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want – Psalm 22(23). Matthew 20:1-16.

Do we tend to the lost?

Ezekiel, as Jeremiah before him, pronounces thundering condemnations on the leaders of God’s people. Not only have they failed as shepherds, but they have fattened and enriched themselves in the process.

God’s people have been prey for their leaders and now roam unguided. Fearful of those who should have led them, they are now vulnerable. I am sure we can all think of some similarities to our own time. One of the most striking notes of God’s anger is that his representatives have not gone after the lost. Although our context is different, there is a challenge to us in this text. Do I seek out those wandering and hurting? Have I strengthened those with weaker faith, bandaged wounds acquired in our broken Church? Do I ‘bother about’ those who are estranged from the faith or the Church? God clearly does not look kindly on apathy toward his wandering people.
