Let go of those things that impede our growth in love

For those of us long in the Christian life, repentance from sin can be a challenge. Not because we can’t repent, but because, by the grace of God, we have repented of our bigger sins. Perhaps we struggle to identify some other sin to turn away from. Ignatius offers us some help here: we may need to repent of our attachments, those things that may not seem sinful but do impede our growing in love. Perhaps a sense of superiority, an unhealthy habit, getting my way more often than not, or clinging to an emotion. Nineveh had Jonah to call the people to account; we have Jesus, whose invitation is gentle and compassionate. It is Jesus who provides the help we need to let go of anything that impedes our growth into wholeness.
