Acts 15:1-6. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord – Ps 121(122):1-5. John 15:1-8.
It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit
Recently, I sent a card to an ex-student thanking her for our long friendship – since 1969 when she was 12. A card came straight back, saying ‘The pleasure is all mine. I liked you the minute I saw you’.
This year, I celebrated a significant birthday with 29 friends, among them 16 former students. In a group card, one wrote ‘You have always been our shining light’. One woman related how I had dinner at her home and how her dad relaxed once I accepted a beer.
Looking back at those days, they were very ordinary. Yet the women remember them as a time of joy and fun. They don’t recall much from my science lessons, but they remember every kindness and word of encouragement. Perhaps this is part of what Jesus means by bearing fruit.
