About Today Readings

St Matthew

Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13. Their message goes out through all the earth – Psalm 18(19):2-5. Matthew 9:9-13.

A personal invitation to follow God

Today’s reading is personal. In the Gospel we encounter Jesus offering Matthew a beautiful invitation: ‘Follow me’. Matthew was a great sinner. A tax collector and as such an outcast from Jewish society. The reading today is an account but it is also a metaphor for you – you are Matthew. We are all Matthew. Each of us a sinner. Each forgiven without asking. Jesus proclaims his mission and makes clear his role in bringing the Kingdom – ‘I have come to call not the righteous but sinners’. The simple invitation and the same endless mercy is offered to you today. May you be like Matthew in your response to this call.
