About Today Readings

St Rita of Cascia

James 4:13-17. Happy the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs – Psalm 48(49):2-3, 6-11. Mark 9:38-40.

You cannot know what will happen tomorrow

We can identify with James when he says we have no control over even our tomorrow – the Covid pandemic taught us that. Perhaps we have learned to be more humble about our plans for future activities. Indeed, our lives and our communities are fragile and vulnerable to unexpected tragedy. Each night we can count our blessings; each morning ask to be prepared for whatever comes. Then James tells us that if we know what is right to do and fail to do it, we are committing a sin. To defend the rights of the poor and Earth, to speak up for the marginalised and voiceless, to put ourselves at risk in caring for others – we know these are good deeds. If we do not act in some way to do these things, James would say we are living in sin.
