Take nothing for the journey

Luke says: ‘The twelve were sent out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.’ This remains the fundamental job of every disciple in every age. So don’t worry about having enough clothes or money. Proclaiming the presence of the kingdom of God has undoubtedly brought healing of mind, body, and soul to many over the centuries. Prayer would have been an essential part of the journey of the twelve. It is essential for our journey too. Ezra’s prayer in the first reading today is a confession of sin, the communal sin of the people. It was about 400 years before Christ, and the descendants of the exile were still struggling to rebuild the temple. Ezra is ashamed and embarrassed to lift his face to God. But he also knows that God was with them even as they repaired the ruins. His public prayer brought the kingdom of God and healing to the community.
