About Today Readings

St Padre Pio of Pietrelcina

Proverbs 30:5-9. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet – Psalm 118(119):29, 72, 89, 101, 104, 163. Luke 9:1-6.

Take nothing for the journey

He sent us out to preach just as we are,
without a staff or food or clothes or cash,
as scared as new-shorn sheep. To preach the Word
we had to knock at doors of shops and homes.

We also had to beg our hosts for food
and shelter from the bitter evening cold.
At first we thought it daft, but Jesus knew
that folk resist you when you come like kings

with gifts. But when you beg from them a gift,
their hearts lie open to receive the word
you bring. That’s how we came at last to know
the only giving is with empty hands.
