About Today Readings

St Oscar Romero

Daniel 3:14-20, 24-25, 28. Glory and praise for ever! – Daniel 3:52-56. John 8:31-42.
If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed

‘You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free’. Even those who believed in Jesus struggled with what he told them. In today’s reading, they question how they – people who have never been enslaved – are not already ‘free’.

Jesus’ mission as the Son of God is so radical, so unworldly, so unimaginable, that all of us sometimes struggle to understand the scope of it. God sent his Son among us to free us from sin, and all God asks in return is for our love. What an astonishing idea!

As we celebrate today on the Feast of St Oscar Romero let us pray that, like him, we might come to better understand and appreciate the love of God, so we can free ourselves from our sinful ways and become the loving and generous people God wishes us to be.
