A generous understanding of generosity
‘Take nothing with you’, Jesus tells the disciples when he sends them out in today’s reading. They’re to proclaim the kingdom and heal the sick, and then rely on the generosity of those they meet.
It’s not easy for us to think about relying on the generosity of others in today’s world. We’re taught to see the world in terms of ‘lifters and leaners’ – those who work and make things happen, and the indolent who rely on handouts. Of course, that ‘economic’ view of humanity doesn’t adequately capture the complexity of our lives and our relationships to each other. Just because someone is reliant on government support doesn’t mean they’re not generously giving of themselves – through care, through relationships and in other ways.
In God’s world, we survive through each other’s generosity. It’s worth considering how we might better embody that in our society today.
