Midnight Mass
Isaiah 9:1-7. Today is born our Saviour, Christ the Lord – Psalm 95(96):1-3, 11-13. Titus 2:11-14. Luke 2:1-14.
Greatest news of our time
This is a dramatic reading, but look further into it and you capture the humility and gentle simplicity of this world-changing event. When we re-read this narrative again and again, we discover it holds the greatest news of all time. Our Messiah has finally come down to earth to lead us home, and the nature of his arrival, in poverty and displacement, causes the skies to fill with angels and shepherds’ hearts to jump.
So many paradoxes. So many times Jesus made himself vulnerable for us, and it began here in a stable in Bethlehem. How can we thank you Jesus? How can we thank you God for becoming human to show your love for us? Let us celebrate this Christmas. Put up the decorations, party with joy and hope, sing those carols, and pop that champagne; but do it in the knowledge that our God became human in the form of Jesus, in the poorest of environments, and bursting with love for us. So party, but also take yourself to the stable to pray, and in that quietest of moments, hold that baby close and look into the eyes of your saviour.
