Beware of false prophets
Amos: Thanks for your advice about false prophets, Jesus. But it’s not much help. By the time it takes for a vine to grow fruit, a false prophet can do enormous harm. How can we spot them earlier? They always seem so good at first. And they speak so well of you!
Jesus: Which false prophets did you have in mind, Amos?
Amos: Well, we had one priest who seemed so kind to kids. They flocked to meetings with him. But he abused them and ruined their lives. Another man wept when he spoke of God’s love. But he was interested only in money. We saw through them too late. What did we miss?
Jesus: Perhaps you forgot that you are all sinners, Amos, and that to love and forgive is not to close your eyes. Or to trust blindly. In these cases, surely, it was not you who sinned.
