The Annunciation of the Lord
Isaiah 7:10-14, 8:10. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will – Ps 39(40):7-11. Hebrews 10:4-10. Luke 1:26-38.
Complete transformation
There are some stories that repeat in many lives, and others that are unique in history. Those that repeat follow familiar themes: betrayal, sacrifice, heroism. Stories that are unique might include some of those themes (certainly Mary’s acceptance of the words of Gabriel in today’s Gospel requires both sacrifice and heroism), but they are also moments of complete transformation; they cannot be repeated, because the world after them will never be the same.
That’s not to say that today’s Gospel doesn’t reverberate through history. It’s so important that we continue to revisit it, marvel at it, and reflect on what it means. More than that, Mary’s words echo in our own hearts, as we ourselves are faced with challenges from God: ‘May it be done to me according to your Word.’
