Jesus is offering to take the load from us
People who have walked the Camino as pilgrims speak of the struggle to only take what they can carry in their backpack. The bare minimum. They know they need to walk unencumbered by a physical weight in order to shed themselves of the weight of their inner selves – the spiritual and emotional baggage they carry. Jesus says to the Twelve, ‘Take nothing for your journey’. He doesn’t suggest it or invite them to think about it, he tells them. It is a direction. It is hard work detaching from our physical comforts, and from the things we need that give us a certain identity or confidence. It is just as hard unloading our internal baggage, discovering the influence of our old inner wounds, letting go of what we thought was our right to hold onto – our hurts, our certain beliefs or our way of seeing things. Jesus is offering to take that load from us, to feel the lightness and freedom he knows we will enjoy, which will enable us to make space for the power and authority he wants to give us, in his name. The world needs that from us, through Jesus, so let’s begin the unloading now. Jesus, I am trying to let go of what I think I need in order to embrace you with empty arms but a heart full of your intentions. Please empower me to do so.
