About Today Readings

St Mark

1 Peter 5:5-14. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord – Psalm 88(89):2-3, 6-7, 16-17. Mark 16:15-20.

True humility allows us to be vulnerable

Today’s first reading is about humility. Humility isn’t about false modesty or downplaying your strengths. I think true humility comes from allowing ourselves to be honest and vulnerable before others and before God. One of the ways we do this is by asking for help.

I am terrible at doing this. I hate asking others for help, especially if it seems too much to ask. I would much rather have everybody think I’m coping just fine, thank you very much.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus sends his apostles out to preach the Good News. It is worth remembering that the apostles were expected to be dependent on the hospitality of others in their ministry.

Lord, help me to be humble, and to ask for help when I need it.
