2 Thessalonians 3:6-10, 16-18. Happy are those who fear the Lord – Ps 127(128):1-2, 4-5. Matthew 23:27-32.
Alas for you pharisees, hypocrites
Hypocrisy, said Oscar Wilde,
is the tribute paid to virtue
by the wicked, who then complain
that other guys are hypocrites.
Lord, that’s just human. Why were you
so angry with the Pharisees?
Was it that, when the guardians
of truth live lie-filled lives,
they kill the truth for folk like me,
and then, like Oscar, we back
off facing the pain of broken lives,
and fear your tenderness and love?
