St Vincent de Paul
Ezra 9:5-9. Blessed be God who lives forever – Tobit 13:2, 4, 6-8. Luke 9:1-6.
Take nothing for the journey
How many applications would there be for employment that has the job description given in Luke’s Gospel today? It is no surprise that this reading has been chosen for the celebration of St Vincent de Paul. He lived this job description. Being totally dependent on those you encounter while doing God’s work is indeed a hard way to get things done, and for hefty fishermen this would have been difficult. How many times have we encountered in our church people who are more concerned about what they own and what they want to do than submitting to Jesus’ demands for apostleship? There is no house-hopping to go to the most comfortable hospitality. There is nothing spare to carry, so if you need something you are dependent on the goodness of others. Our lives get so cluttered with things that an opportunity to review and restore is necessary for our souls.
