About Today Readings

Holy Innocents

1 John 1:5 – 2:2. Our soul has escaped like a bird from the hunter’s nest – Psalm 123(124):2-5, 7-8. Matthew 2:13-18.

Lord help us to choose your light

The terrible story of the Holy Innocents retains its power to stop the breath. Herod, fearing the child the Wise Men have prophesised as the Messiah, commands his soldiers to find and kill every 2-year-old child in and around Bethlehem. He hopes that the infant Jesus will be one of them. In God there is no darkness, only light. It is human choice and human hands which massacre the innocent. But God has sent his Son to redeem us from the power of sin and death. Joseph, warned by angels in a dream, flees with Mary and Jesus into Egypt as hunted refugees, and they are saved from peril. Joseph humbly trusts in the Lord, and does the best he can do, following God’s command. Lord, help me to trust and be brave; to choose your light, not darkness, to listen and act in your name.
