Ss Simon and Jude
Ephesians 2:19-22. Their message goes out through all the earth – Ps 18(19):2-5. Luke 6:12-19.
We are chosen
I wonder how Judas son of James (Jude) and Simon the Zealot felt about being chosen as part of Jesus’ inner circle. Like being selected for a national football team, maybe? Hardly. A rag tag bunch more highly motivated than highly skilled to carry out Jesus’ mission of love.
It’s Jude and Simon’s feast day today. These two travelled together tirelessly as missionaries of the Good News. In the Gospel, Jesus had been up the mountain praying, alone with God. He returns to level ground to join his disciples and choose from them the Twelve who will be the apostles. From here he demonstrates what it will mean to follow his way – meeting with people, the crowds, to teach and heal and love them. Just as Jesus chose Jude and Simon, he’s always choosing us and asking us to follow him, to get out there and love wholeheartedly like him.
