About Today Readings

St Wenceslaus; Ss Laurence Ruiz & Cc

Job 9:1-12, 14-16. Let my prayer come before you, Lord – Psalm 87(88):10-15. Luke 9:57-62.

I will follow you wherever you go

Often a commitment to a new cause requires us to step outside our comfort zones. Initially fired up in our righteousness we make light of difficulties but after a while when problems multiply and the successes don’t come, we perhaps long to retreat to what is familiar and easy. In a few months’ time one of the traditional carols likely to be heard will be ‘Good King Wenceslaus’. The lyrics tell how king and page set out to bring succour to a poor family but when the going becomes treacherous the page falls behind, not knowing how to continue. Rather than give up the king tells the page to walk in his footsteps where he will be protected from the perishing cold.

Luke’s Gospel seems harsh. Those who would follow Christ have to commit wholeheartedly. There can be no family obligations more important, no creature comforts to distract from the mission. However, those who do follow know that Jesus is always in the lead, giving his protection.
