Prepare the ground
One of the best things about the parable of the sower in today’s Gospel is that there’s no ambiguity about Jesus’ meaning. The apostles asked on behalf of all of us what was meant, and Jesus explained in simple terms – it was about making sure there was fertile soil for the Word to take root. Even those of us who are not gardeners know for plants to thrive the ground must be cleared of weeds and stones, built up, raked and fertilised.
How are you helping the Word take root within you? Do you clear your heart of weeds by letting go of hurts and resentments? Do you fertilise with prayer and good works? Preparation can be time-consuming, lonely and difficult, but the result is wondrous.
