The value of the Gospel gifts
Freedom. The theme of these readings – freedom from unjust incarceration, freedom to be true to one’s faith, freedom from fear knowing the kingdom of God was imminent. Freedom in today’s terms can bend to one’s individual desires – how good would it be for the world to return to an understanding of freedom as ensuring the good of the other, the good of the community. Renewing the bedrock of the early church as one of ‘love one another as I have loved you’ across our global community is needed desperately. I love the phrase ‘keys of the kingdom of heaven’ – I am sure they are accessible to all of us, knowing Jesus’ way helps us along in finding peace, joy and hope. I wish more of our community knew the real value of these Gospel gifts. Let us always work towards the freedom the Gospel and those who follow it give us – a thirst for justice, peace and love for the other.
