Romans 8:26-30. All my hope, O Lord, is in your loving kindness – Ps 12(13):4-6. Luke 13:22-30.
The last will be first
In his letter to the Romans, St Paul assures us that the Spirit always prays with us, expressing what we need in a way known only to God. What a joyous thought. Many of us will have experienced at some time in our life being so vulnerable and fragile that praying became impossible. We needed others to pray for us. What underlies all of this is God’s presence through our belief. The psalmist leads us into prayer in the great hope that it is God’s loving kindness that will bring us to the peace we long for, and yet the Gospel from Luke seems to be forewarning us. It is not easy to believe and to reach a point where the Spirit’s work within us is evident in our prayer. Yet we cannot be complacent, for as Jesus tells us, those who are last will become first and those who are first will become last.
