Allow God room to help our understanding

Every year, on the Wednesday after Easter, we ponder the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. It is a Gospel which unfolds the entire mystery of living as a Christian. No sooner have we recognised Jesus at our table or desk or workbench or counter, than he has vanished, and we are back on the road again. We could spend time with the questions that structure the story, using them to discover God in our lives. ‘What are you talking about as you walk along?’ In other words, what’s on our mind? ‘Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer?’ In other words, don’t get swallowed by what’s on your mind, but take a broader view. ‘Were not our hearts burning within us as he explained the scripture?’ That is, allow God room to help us understand and the tide of hope will turn.
