Discerning a call to mission in conversation

Throughout his life Jesus prayed to the Father. As he did, we might expect that he sought insight and guidance, to align his will in the specific contexts he was engaged in with the will of the Father. In other words, Jesus is discerning throughout his ministry.

Jesus’ meeting with the Canaanite woman was a moment of discernment too. She invites him to see that his earthly ministry was to go beyond ‘only the lost sheep of the house of Israel’. His ministry was to be a ministry for all people. The foreign woman’s ‘great faith’ shows him the way. The Son of God in this scene shows a flexibility and capacity to discern the call to mission in conversation. With whom and where are we being invited to discern the mission that is our life?
