The Lamb of God

Recently I was reading the story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, an Irish-born priest stationed in Rome during the Second World War who created a network to hide and support escaped prisoners and Jewish families being hunted by the Nazis. The chief of the German police in Rome, Herbert Kappler, led the efforts of the SS to trail and capture O’Flaherty, organising several unsuccessful plots to capture and execute him. All the while, O’Flaherty continued his work, aiding an estimated 6000 people during the war.

After the war ended, Kappler was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to life in prison. O’Flaherty became his only visitor, travelling to the prison every month to see him. Eventually Kappler asked to be brought into the Catholic faith, and O’Flaherty was the one to baptise him. ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.’
