Are we willing to love fully?
It is striking to recognise that if we live with love, there is no need of commandments and laws. To love another is to will the good of the other, to desire for them only what brings them to the fullness of relationship with God. It is to order and orient everything in the context of that life-giving relationship.
When Jesus offers the striking words that we must ‘hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself’ to be his disciples, we recoil a little. It seems we must understand these words as speaking to our orientation. We are asked to consider whether we are willing to have our lives, and all our constitutive relationships, flow out of our relationship with God. Are we willing to love fully, without precondition?
