Encounters with God

Often, global events such as World Youth Day or Catholic conferences are referred to as ‘mountain-top experiences’ of faith. Perhaps because of the long anticipation and preparation for them, which parallels that of an expedition, such as a great hike or climb. However, these events, while powerful, aren’t the only way for people to have an ‘encounter with God’.

In the First Reading, we learn of Moses’ transformative mountain-top experience with God. This wasn’t a big event with hundreds or thousands or millions of people around. It was in the quiet of his prayer time with God, away from society.

This time of speaking with the Lord in prayer visibly changed Moses (even though he didn’t realise it at first). So much so, that Moses even tried to mitigate the intensity of it. Do we give legitimacy to the intimate consolations which God has spoken to us through prayer?
