About Today Readings

St Andrew

Romans 10:9-18. Their message goes out through all the earth – Psalm 18(19):2-5. Matthew 4:18-22.

We wait in joyful hope

It is interesting to read the story of Andrew and the other fisherfolk during Advent. I have always imagined that Jesus took them completely by surprise. But perhaps there is a sense in which, deep down, they had been waiting for just such a moment as this. All their lives, they followed the tides and carefully mended their nets. One day followed another, much the same as the one that had gone before. Yet Advent reminds us that there is no such thing as a predictable day. Even small changes speak to us of a God who is always fishing for our response, throwing a line into our ordinary routine. Whether we realise it or not, we are always waiting for God’s love and grace to carry us along. It could be that when Jesus called people away from their boats, they had already been hoping for something more from life. Please God, we are also waiting in joyful hope.
