About Today Readings

St Jerome

Challenges of discipleship

There are common challenges in today’s readings. Job declares that God alone is to be given all honour as judge and creator. The psalm embodies a plaintive cry for help, and in this particular pericope there is questioning and doubt. It does not feel like God is listening. Job felt the same but declared to his friends that God is not to be questioned because, compared to the majesty of God’s creation, we are almost nothing.

The Gospel is rather ruthless and challenging. To be a disciple we cannot demand creature comforts; Jesus had nowhere to lay his head. We cannot put family traditions in front of the needs of our discipleship, and we cannot remain anchored in the past if we are to follow Christ. Discipleship is forward-oriented. We have to temper such demands with common sense and self-care. Martyrdom is not required, but can we accept the challenge of our discipleship?
