In the beginning
We can sometimes be unhealthily preoccupied with beginnings and endings. Many a child wishes to be older, while adults would gladly return to a time when their problems seemed much fewer. We can put too much store in how wonderful the past was or conversely too much faith in a mythical future. Today’s Gospel then is a wonderful reading to finish the calendar year and begin anew, because rather than being about arbitrary stops and starts it speaks of the comfort of the eternity of God’s accompaniment. ‘In the beginning was the Word: and the Word was with God and the Word was God’.
