About Today Readings

St John Bosco.

2 Samuel 24:2, 9-17. Psalm 31(32):1-2, 5-7. Mark 6:1-6.

Lord, forgive the wrong I have done—Psalm 31(32):1-2, 5-7.

How often are we deceived by appearances; how seldom do we look for the truth that is hidden from immediate view?

The people of Nazareth could not see the fullness of Jesus and his mission when he returned home. After all, was he not the carpenter’s son? How could he be anybody but that? How often too, in the face of adversity and difficulty, the question comes to our lips: ‘Why should this happen to me?’

The answer is clearly given in today’s first reading: it is the work of God, shaping us to be his son or daughter, even though his work is unrecognised as it was in the case of Jesus who they failed to comprehend at Nazareth.

Don’t let me get in the way Lord, and don’t give up on me when I start to give up on you. Thanks, Lord.
