About Today Readings

The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Zephaniah 3:14-18. Among you is the great and Holy One of Israel – Isaiah 12:2-6. Luke 1:39-56.

For the Almighty has done great things for me

Unlike our prayers which are often mainly intercessory in character, Mary’s Magnificat, Zechariah’s Benedictus and the psalms focus on and celebrate what God has already done and is doing for people of faith, hope and love. Is there a better way of practising devotion to Mary than by imitating the devotion of Mary?

As her cousin Elizabeth and many great saints would attest, she is our exemplar in prayer as in so many other aspects of the Christian life. With Mary I can say with gratitude, as I make her subversive prayer my own, ‘God has done great things for me. Holy is his name.’ The Church prays the Magnificat daily at Vespers. We could make it a regular part of our own prayer at the end of each day.
