St John Damascene
Isaiah 25:6-10. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life – Psalm 22(23). Matthew 15:29-37.
Relationships require effort
The image that holds today’s readings together is of a mountain. The first reading talks about how the Lord of hosts will provide rich food and choice wines for people on the mountain, and how he will destroy death for ever. In the second reading, we see the realisation of this prophecy also taking place atop a mountain, where Jesus heals the afflicted and provides food for the hungry crowds.
Why a mountain? Perhaps it is because it’s a place that we have to choose to go ourselves. God might walk among us, but if we want a relationship with God, if we want our wounds healed and our needs fulfilled, then we have to put some effort in. We have to strive to be with God.
Let’s reflect today on the mountains that we might need to climb to strengthen our relationship with God.
