About Today Readings

St Charles Borromeo

Philippians 2:12-18. The Lord is my light and my salvation – Psalm 26(27):1, 4, 13-14. Luke 14:25-33.

The Lord is my light and my salvation…

….you shine like lights in the world

Discipleship is a personal, deliberate choice and at times not an easy one. In today’s Gospel Jesus asks if we are ready to accept difficulty with him, to know that there will be a cost in following him, a sacrifice. It speaks of the importance of a real process of discernment in our life choices. An ability to sense God’s heart and purpose for us. Being attentive to this process is deeply personal, meaning that we are less likely to be influenced or swayed by the crowd. Jesus was deliberate in his challenge to the crowds travelling with him. The call to discipleship is deeply personal and highly relational. We must be willing to commit and to be challenged. By doing this we may experience God’s light and salvation helping us shine like lights in the world ready to follow and serve in new ways.
