About Today Readings

1 Corinthians 3:1-9. Happy the people the Lord has chosen to be his own – Psalm 32(33):12-15, 20-21. Luke 4:38-44.

How do we respond to Jesus?

The line that first stood out for me from today’s reading comes after Jesus heals the mother-in-law of Simon: ‘She got up immediately and waited on them’. To our modern sensibility, it feels wrong that so shortly after suffering illness the female in the household must go and wait on the men.

What struck me after some reflection, however, was how the mother-in-law’s response to Jesus is contrasted with the other responses in the reading. The response of the demons is to cry out and seek to reveal Jesus, but they are rebuked. The response of the crowds to Jesus is to seek to monopolise him, but they are also turned down. Only the mother-in-law, whose response is to serve Jesus, is given time with Jesus in her household.

What is our response to Jesus?
