About Today Readings

Wednesday in Holy Week

Isaiah 50:4-9. Lord, in your great love, answer me – Psalm 68(69):8-10, 21-22, 31, 33-34. Matthew 26:14-25.

Our belief is a relationship

The confidence of the prophet in today’s first reading is overwhelming. A steadfast trust in God. As we walk with Jesus through Holy Week, we need that steadfast commitment, the bedrock of faith. We need it all the more given we can have so much pulling us to-and-fro. Just as Judas Iscariot was pushed and pulled between different commitments and loyalties.

Judas lost his belief, lost faith, in that he was no longer able to commit to his relationship with Jesus. As Christians our faith is to believe in someone. Our belief is a relationship, not simply a matter of recitation. It is betrayal of relationship which shows up the worst of our humanity. The sting of Jesus’ words after Judas lies to him express the pain and disappointment of broken relationships, of being unable to live a steadfast love.
