A prophet is not recognised in his own country
Your townsfolk, Jesus, did not think
You too impressive but too plain
To be the Voice of God. They could
Not trust what eyes and ears approved.
No trust – no miracles, they found.
Wherever else can we, too, hear
Your voice and recognise your face
If not in simple, homely things?
Help us to see in each day’s news
The small events, the unmarked deaths,
The truthful words and kindly acts
Through which you teach us how to live.
