About Today Readings

St Anthony Zaccaria

Genesis 21:5, 8-20. The Lord hears the cry of the poor – Psalm 33(34):7-8, 10-13. Matthew 8:28-34.

Good is demanded of us

One of the things the Gospels make clear is that the proclamation of that Good News, comes amid much bad news. There is evil in the world. Our modern minds might find it difficult to take demoniacs, let alone such spirits entering herds of pigs, but we are surely conscious of how much stands in the way of that which is good, true and beautiful.

To stand authentically against evil, against what leads away from God, demands an awful lot of good. It requires an intimate relationship with the One who is goodness. If we are to seek the good, to live good lives, and so resist the ways we can be invited away from God, maybe we need to wail as Hagar’s son wails. In humility such as that, God might be with us as he was with that boy.
