About Today Readings

Romans 13:8-10. Happy the merciful who give to those in need – Ps 111(112):2, 4-5, 9. Luke 14:25-33.

Love is the one universal attachment

Jesus offers no less than everything, and in return he asks his followers for no less than everything.

The things that attach us to the mortal life need to be set aside if we are to set sights on the kingdom that Jesus is preaching about. If we don’t set them aside, we’ll find ourselves overburdened, unable to complete the tasks God has given us. We need all the resources we can muster to reach the kingdom.

Of course, this needs to be set alongside Jesus’ other teaching, summed up in the First Reading: ‘Love is the fulfilment of the law.’ We set aside attachments, but we replace them with one universal attachment – love. Through love, everything we give up is returned to us in spades.
