About Today Readings

St Nicholas

Isaiah 25:6–10. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life – Psalm 22(23). Matthew 15:29–37.

What can be

I haven’t seen much in the way of miraculous healings. A friend was in a head-on collision with a semi-trailer where she should have died but instead made a full recovery. Another friend was diagnosed with cancer that should have been treatable, but wasn’t. We all prayed for him but he died far sooner than doctors anticipated. Similarly, life for the people in this passage would have been beset by unpredictable stories of health failures and triumphs. In the ancient world, when medical understanding was limited and the repercussions of illnesses and accidents were often devastating, Jesus’ healing acts would have been nothing short of revolutionary. Here, Jesus introduces a taste of the Kingdom of Heaven where pain has no dominion. Each miracle challenges the fatalistic acceptance of ‘what is’ and beckons to a divine promise of ‘what can be’. This wasn’t just about healing; it was a profound theological statement about God’s desire for wholeness and restoration.
