ASH WEDNESDAY. Day of fast and abstinence.
Joel 2:12-18. Psalm 50(51):3-6, 12-14, 17. 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2. Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18.
Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned – Psalm 50(51):3-6, 12-14, 17.
‘Now is the day of our salvation.’
We begin Lent with those well-known words of Jesus as he warns people not to parade their good deeds in public as some of the Pharisees and teachers did.
When they give alms, he says, their right hand should not know what the left hand is doing. He wanted his followers to be generous givers rather than look for approval. Today his advice would probably fall on deaf ears or be met with derision.
Jesus would often go off to a quiet place to pray, as he is asking of us here, to shut the door on distractions and just be present with our loving God. These words may well begin our Lenten journey. But we could also take them as goals to live by for the rest of the year, for each day is the day of our salvation.Email this Print This Page
