God is close

God’s promise to Israel throughout the Torah, and especially in Deuteronomy, is bound up with the promise of land. There is no avoiding the difficulties of this claim, then and now. The promise is suggestive, in a way that Christ makes fully explicit, of God’s closeness to his people. God keeps telling Israel how close he is. Jesus comes to fulfil this commitment to closeness. In this he comes to fulfil the Law precisely because the Law is established to make possible right relationship between Israel and God. But the Law alone could never quite work. In and through Christ, God intervenes so that we can experience his closeness, and live in the fullness of relationship which is our salvation. Today you might wonder at the ways God comes close to you, and the joy your relationship brings.
