Philippians 2:12-18. The Lord is my light and my salvation – Psalm 26(27):1, 4, 13-14. Luke 14:25-33.
Our love for others flows out of loving relationship with God
Hate is a strong, rather shocking invocation to hear on Jesus’ lips. Especially as he suggests we should hate those whom we might expect to love most. There is a certain hyperbole here. He grabs us and gets us thinking, as no doubt he did for those who listened to him live. Jesus seems to be pointing to the power and importance of working out our foundations. If some relationship has a prior claim on us, even if it’s a good thing of itself, then we are more likely to go wrong. If, however, our love for others flows out of our loving relationship with God through Jesus, then we are likely to get the proportions and priorities right. Today we might recognise the way things that seem good can get in the way of our relationship with God. What do I need to let go of?
