About Today Readings

1 Kings 10:1–10. The mouths of the just murmur wisdom – Psalm 36(37):5–6, 30–31, 39–40. Mark 7:14–23.

The wisdom of Solomon

‘The mouths of the just murmur wisdom.’ Only a few verses of this long psalm 36 (37) reflect the readings of today’s liturgy. The Queen of Sheba comes with her wealth of gold and spices and camels from the deep south of Arabia to test the fame of Solomon. Despite the evidence of Solomon’s great wealth – the house he had built, the food on his table, the clothes his valets wore, and so on – her conclusion is that Solomon’s wealth lies in his wisdom. Today’s Gospel also speaks of wisdom. The Lord teaches that what comes out of a person defiles that person; fornication, theft, murder, avarice, deceit, and so on. The gift of wisdom will help us identify and own who we really are. ‘The mouths of the just murmur wisdom,’ the psalm says. ‘Though the wicked draw the sword . . . their swords will only pierce their own hearts.’
