Love one another
It’s easy to pass over those moments in the Gospels, as in today’s text, when Jesus goes off to pray. Such moments can feel like an interlude. It’s unlikely Jesus experienced his prayer in this way. It may be worth taking some time to contemplate Jesus at prayer. Can you imagine yourself praying alongside him? What does that feel like?
We can leave aside some of the theological speculation about just how Jesus prayed. It seems reasonable to suggest, though, that his prayer was characterised by love. Our first reading tells us that ‘God is love’. Those moments when Jesus, fully human and fully divine, prayed intentionally must have been intense moments of love. As John’s letter suggests, recognising God’s love for us draws us to love one another, and in this way ‘his love will be complete in us’.
